Update October 19

Good morning and welcome to one of the last half dozen updates I will write for you after a six year stretch! Outside the sun is still shining and the weather remains fantastic for late October, the longer it continues the better.

Last weekend the club was busy with the Walton Lifeboat crew holding a retirement celebration for Philip Oxley who has acted as Secretary for many years. Well done Phil. You have done an amazing job, I believe it was a good night to celebrate your many years of service.
The club dining room was pretty quiet on Sunday, it is clear from members’ feedback that the Carvery is important for Sunday lunch. I am very pleased to advise you that Pete and Bex are now back and our Carvery will be served from midday as usual.
Although the dining room was quiet the bar was busy and I understand it became a place of celebration as James Oxley lead the fleet home to record a good win. There is one race remaining in the Autumn Series which is on Sunday 28th at 1200, unfortunately I won’t be able to give James a chance to repeat his victory as I am away on a golf weekend, happily I have done enough to win the series without doing the last race.
Apart from the Snowball Race on Boxing Day that is the end of club dinghy racing for the year, it is certainly a time of endings………

Our cruisers managed to get away for a late Autumn cruise, the weather didn’t prevent five boats from making their way up to Woolverstone and the Royal Harwich Yacht Club. There is a report which is attached to this Update. Don’t forget also that all reports now can be seen on the club website. The club website is growing all the time and more reports and information are being posted on there.
Don’t forget the last cruise of the year is on 2nd November up to Ipswich for the Fireworks. We have changed the Sunday catering hours for that day with the dining room open from 1800-2000 for just that one winter Sunday.

After the weekend the club has been pretty quiet. We open the bar on Mondays and Tuesdays and freshly made sandwiches are available but these days have been very quiet the past few weeks.
We held a steak Night on Wednesday but again it was a pretty quiet night.
Thursday we had our ladies lunching but apart from the Committee meetings upstairs the club was pretty quiet again.
Tonight we are holding a Fish Supper to raise funds to support our marvellous Walton Lifeboat. There is a choice of three fish dishes and two choices for dessert. The cost is just £15 of which £5 goes directly into the lifeboat’s coffers.
There are a lot of names on the list already but if you come down we will try and fit you in somewhere, there are not designated tables but long tables set up so it should work smoothly. It is an excellent cause and we want to make it a good evening and raise as much as possible for our Lifeboat.

Our Training section are running a course over the half term starting on this Monday through to Wednesday, there may still be places available. Please contact Anna at training@wfyc.co.uk. Anna has also asked me to mention that there has been interest from members wishing to become RYA dinghy instructors. There are plans to run an instructors course, probably around Easter time, please make contact through the same training email address training@wfyc.co.uk

A reminder we will be holding a Steak Night again this Wednesday.

Right, before I deal with any more ‘house’ matters I need to mention the fact that after a considerable amount of work by the subcommittee we are holding a forum at the club tomorrow afternoon at 1630.
Charles Penfold will be present and as our ‘local expert retired solicitor’ he will be able to answer any remaining questions as we continue down the path of the club becoming a company limited by guarantee and CASC registered.
You have all now had access to the all the documents and this is your opportunity to satisfy yourself that your committee are acting in your club’s best interest.

Ok, back to a few more house matters before finishing for today.
Firstly your sub renewals have been out now for nearly three weeks. To date the number of members renewing is up on the same period last year. Don’t forget that If you want to take advantage of renewing at last year’s prices you have to renew before the end of the month.

Christmas is coming! We are holding Christmas on the Quay a little earlier this year, this is popular with some not so with others…….. there is no choice of date for this now, the lifeboat are booked and will be here on the day. Anne is working hard to get all arrangements in place, she desperately needs more volunteers to make it successful, there is a poster attached with details, please try and give us some help for this important day.

Tina has asked me to remind you that she is taking bookings for Christmas parties now, please speak to her at the bar about available dates..
That, I think, is about it for this week, all that remains is for me to wish you a good week and I look forward to seeing you around your club.
