Update September 21 – Windy weather….

Good morning, welcome to another Update of what is happening at your club.
Each week for months I have started by commenting on this fantastic summer we have been blessed with. Now it seems the endless lovely weather is coming to an end. There are storms crossing the country and we are going to get gale force winds today. On this coast there is a little respite tomorrow then winds reaching 50knts on Sunday. I am not sure today is the best day for me to have a very rare venture out on to the golf course but that is what I shall be doing, should be interesting!
It is the last weekend in the Haven Series, also the last racing for us on Blue Beeste. Charlie and me are hanging up our yacht racing boots after nearly forty years of racing together, sad times, it has been amazing.
Due to the expected winds on Sunday it looks like racing will finish on Saturday, it is sad for us on B.B. but it is sad for all of us because the Haven Series has been a fantastic arena for yacht racing on the East Coast and W&FYC have been an intrinsic part of it for its whole existence. The Haven Series will finish in its present format after this weekend, it will be decided in the coming weeks if there will be a ‘lower key’ competition available to club boats. It is clear though that the competition for the top notch IRC boats is disappearing from our coast.

As a result of the weather forecast for the weekend the visit by Haven Ports Yacht Club tomorrow night has been cancelled. Tomorrow evening will be a quiet evening at the club, the dining room and bar will of course be open………..

Tonight we have a Wine Tasting Evening courtesy of Stephen Wilkinson, we will have a selection of excellent wines with cheese and biscuits, some interesting information about the wines being served and even a little quiz with a prize at the end of the evening!
Tickets are still available, they are just £15 each, the wines have been generously donated to the club so £10 from every ticket goes to the club’s Centenary Fund towards the Centenary project.

Talking of quizzes, I have been asked to remind you that Shotley are coming for the annual quiz between the two clubs. We need more members for our team, if you can give your time to this it is on next Saturday (29th) there is an optional supper first.
If you can join us for this can you please put your names on the sign up sheet in the usual place in the foyer.

On Wednesday we are having a Steak Night, these are still a really good evening in the club and the steaks are superb.

On Thursday our ladies are lunching, there is a sign up sheet in the usual place if you wish to join them.

On Saturday (29th) the club is hosting a Macmillan Coffee Morning, Anne has been organising this and would really appreciate a donation of some cakes, there is a flyer attached.

On Saturday evening we have the aforementioned quiz with Shotley and we also have St Edmundsbury Yacht Club visiting us so it will be a good busy evening.

On Sunday we will have our usual popular Carvery. This week and next Sunday we will have the two sessions, midday to 1430 then 1800 through to 2000hrs. From Sunday 7th October we will be reverting to winter Sunday hours with the Carvery continuing later in the afternoon but the dining room not opening in the evening (Pete likes to watch Songs of Praise by the fire in the winter!) Just to complicate things, Pete and Bex are on holiday from the 7th for a week so there won’t actually be Carvery but an alternative menu on that day!
However, with our cruisers having their annual last cruise of the season up to Ipswich for the fireworks, we will revert back to summer hours for Sunday 4th November, for just that one day.

This is going to a mercifully short one this week, I am going off to get blown round Frinton Golf course, I intend to be back for the wine tasting later.
A reminder that the website is now more developed and the reports on dinghy racing etc are now available on there. Suffice to say we had a good race in the Autumn Series on Sunday, there was a good turnout in boisterous conditions!
The next race is next Sunday (30th) at 1400hrs

All that remains is for me to wish you a good coming week. I look forward to seeing you around your club, oh and Fore!

Martin
