Royal Harwich Yacht Club
4th, 5th, 6th October 2019
Thirteen Club crews attended the renamed “First of the Winter Rains” cruise to the Royal Harwich Yacht Club for the penultimate Club cruise of the year. A visit to the Royal Harwich is always a very popular venue with its picturesque position on the south bank of the river Orwell a delight.
The planned two nights, Friday and Saturday, visit was curtailed to the Friday night only berthing due the forecast and subsequent Sunday weather of very heavy rain and gale force winds. Due to the late morning low water on Friday crews made an early afternoon departure from Walton in rather light weather conditions with a subsequent increase on passage of wind gusts in excess of 30kts. On arrival at the Royal Harwich YC we were berthed very efficiently by Ian the Duty Harbour Master with some “rafting up” on the outer pontoon, this can cause some excitement for their crew in the early hours of the morning with a passing Coaster making passage either to or from the Port of Ipswich!!
Thirty one crew attended our excellent Cruiser Dinner that evening provided by Monika and her Royal Harwich catering team in the club dining room, my thanks to our Club “shore party” that joined us for the evening.
With our pm departure on Saturday there was time for the morning riverside walk for the ritual early lunchtime libation at the Butt & Oyster before returning for our passage home to Walton in the afternoon. Rather disappointed that we had to curtail our visit, this was somewhat allayed when listening to the heavy rain and wind across the foredeck tucked up in ones bunk Sunday morning. With our early return crews enjoyed an excellent Sunday lunch in the Club dining room provided by Peter and Tina’s team and certainly a return visit to the Royal Harwich YC is “pencilled in” for next season. My thanks to all for attending, your company was a pleasure.
Cheers & Regards. Roly.
