With the season nearing its end the decision was made to set the course as round Horsey Island so the race could be a double header counting for series points and the Round The Island trophy.
Class 2 set off at 1400 hours with a short reach to the corner of the Twizzle before coming hard on the wind for a beat up the main channel to Stone Point.
Sue Wood in her Laser 4.7 started well with the Jewel of Robin Cooper in pursuit.
The faster boats in Class 1 started five minutes later.
The two Phantoms crossed the line first, James Oxley, fresh from his excellent performance at the National Championships leading Martin Jenkins but the Solo of Tim Oxley and the National Twelve of Simon Hipkin right in the mix.
Glen Bacon in his TOY was buried at the start and took a while to get away from his slower counterparts.
The two Phantoms stretched away from the fleet but were engaged in a very tight duel of their own.
Oxley lead to Stone Point but Jenkins slipped past on an exchange of tacks and lead round the back of the island.
Bacon’s TOY got clear of his rivals and closed the distance between himself and the leaders. Hipkin in the Twelve was enjoying the conditions and with crew Beth Newland they were maintaining a very close contact with the Phantoms on handicap.
Oxley took the lead rounding Wade buoy and the Phantoms were side by side as they reached down the Twizzle. Jenkins managed to nose ahead in a close exchange of gybes and rounded Spit, the last mark with just the fetch to the finish line to go.
Jenkins crossed the line just eleven seconds ahead of Oxley, watches were then set to time how close the Twelve was behind. At eight minutes back the result was going to
be close. In the end Jenkins won, James Oxley second and Simon Hipkin just twenty six seconds behind the leader. After an hour and twenty minutes racing for less than half a minute between the first three boats shows how close the competition is.
