Autumn Series Race 1
There was a good turnout for both fleets in the first of Walton and Frinton yacht Clubs Autumn Series Races. Race Officer Alec Moss set a good long course in perfect sailing conditions.
Fleet 2 was first away and it was good to see three Jewels sailing as well as the modern Lasers (small rig) and Topaz. The warm ten knot breeze was ideal for the lighter boats and the Newland twins, Eleanor and Sophie in their Lasers broke clear into a comfortable lead from the rest of the fleet.
Robin Cooper led the traditional Jewels but was unable to keep close enough to the leaders to beat them on handicap. First across the finish line was Eleanor, just 45seconds ahead of her sister Sophie. Robin Cooper finished as first Jewel and third overall.
In the faster Fleet 1 competition was tough. The two Phantoms of James Oxley and Martin Jenkins had their work cut out with Simon Hipkin Sailing one of the Hadrons he built.john Summerfield in his Laser, Petra Potasse in her Javelin and Paul Burnage in his Wayfarer have all been ‘upping their game’ lately.
First out of the start line was Jenkins’s Phantom, hotly pursued by Hipkin’s Hadron and Oxley’s Phantom! Jenkins led round the first mark but with a broad reach to Watch Mark, Oxley, sporting a fast new sail powered through to take the lead for the next couple of legs.
Hipkin picked up a useful wind shift on the beat to Kirby Buoy got past both Phantoms and took the lead briefly. Oxley regained the lead and was able to stretch away on the reach to the finish, Hipkin’s and Jenkins finished abreast of each other but Hipkin’s Hadron had sufficient handicap allowance to win by some 35 seconds from Oxley who was second and Jenkins third.
