Cadet week news

Cadet Week, Saturday 17th to Wednesday 21st August – register now!

From Nicola (and Alex)

How time has flown – we are less than two months away from the highlight of the year for the youngsters in the club – Cadet Week 2019, which runs from Saturday 17th – Wednesday 21st August.

Please remember this week is a racing week, not a learn to sail week, and young people should have completed appropriate level RYA courses and be competent and safe for the fleet they intend to join. Young children can sail in Mirror dinghies with adults, but all others are expected to sail independently. We usually have fleets of Mirrors, Optimists, Teras, Topazes, Toppers, Picos and Lasers. The usual full social programme of games, pier, film, boat trip, farm and prize-giving are all planned.

Registration is now open via the link: Make no payments yet – they will be collected at the evening parents’ and helpers briefing. We have less flexibility this year with hiring the RYA dinghy fleets so if you want to sail in a hired boat, you must register by Sunday 21st July. If you can sort out helms and crews for boats too, that would help enormously. If you have your own boat, early registration is helpful but not essential.

We need at least one adult from each family to help, and a number of stalwarts of the safety boat team cannot come this year, so we will need more safety-boat qualified adults to step up and run the rescue boats. This is a good opportunity for some of the former cadets to come back and help the next generation! Please complete the helper registration page. The parents’ and helpers’ briefing will be at 2000 on Friday 16th August in the Bill Gibbon room, and perpetual trophies awarded in 2018 should be returned then, having been engraved. The first day’s activity will start at 10 am.  We look forward to another excellent week on the water.
