Accelerating to series win

James has time to put his feet up!

Excellent sailing conditions greeted the dinghy racers at Walton and Frinton Yacht Club as they launched and sailed to the starting area at the mouth of the Twizzle for the fourth race in the Spring Series.

James Oxley in his Phantom has been on excellent form this season and he was hoping to consolidate his lead in the series overall.

The start was a line between the Committee Boat and Romany Rye buoy, the first leg was a tight reach to Watch buoy.

Martin Jenkins in his Phantom started well at the pin end of the line and led the fleet up the West Bank of the river.

In the light eight knot breeze Oxley was able to accelerate quicker and managed to sail over the top of the leader and rounded the first mark ten seconds ahead. Petra Potasse in the Javelin rounded third behind the leaders with Dominic Jacobs in his Laser and Tim Oxley in his Hadron giving chase.

With a difficult wind direction Race Officer Alec Moss found it hard to set a true beat which made the race a bit of a procession with fewer opportunities for place changing.

Oxley stretched his lead to nearly a minute in the one hour and ten minute race, Jenkins finished second and the Javelin and Laser of Jacobs were some five minutes further back.

After handicaps had been applied the race win was Oxley’s and Jacobs edged Jenkins back to third by ten seconds.

With one race to go the series is looking set to be Oxley’s, the fact that he is getting married the day before the race might be significant………..

Martin a fraction off the pace.
Petra overtakes Tim Oxley who’s still getting to grips with his new boat.
