The end of last season 2007 a new Yellow Pillar buoy
was placed by the Shotley Peninsular, position: 50°57'·32N x 001°17'·46E (WGS 84)
and was given the name:

'SHOTLEY HORSE'  Fl (4) Y 10s

It will be deployed again this coming year 2008. The reason for its deployment was to encourage
the local sailing fraternity to pass around this buoy when sailing from the Stour to the Orwell or visa versa,
and not the 'Shotley Spit' Cardinal thus keeping the sailing boats away from the main channel.

Walton & Frinton Yacht Club

Snowball race at Walton & Frinton Yacht Club

In glorious sunshine The Walton & Frinton Yacht Club’s dinghy fleet assembled for their traditional snowball race on Boxing Day.

The race took part close to the club to allow spectators a good view, and club members found that the fleet assembled spanned the class range, from an Iso racer to a traditional lugsail dinghy.

In the light breeze an early lead was taken by the Laser of Tristan Hart, which he maintained throughout the race, and in the narrow waters of the upper Walton Backwaters the Iso of Geoff Parker, together with the Blaze of Geoff Battersby, were not able to achieve enough boatspeed to pull ahead. Simon Hipkin in a Laser Radial kept tight in with this leading bunch.

The downwind legs, sailed against the tide, suited these faster boats, and the rest of the fleet was led by the Jewel of Chris Brooke, with Nick Wood in a Skipper in close contention. Nicola Wilberforce in a traditional lugsail dinghy sailed well to lead one of the faster Picos to the finish line.

Simon Hipkin was awarded the Snowball Trophy , being the first club member, with a commemorative glass presented to Tristan Hart, who narrowly beat him to first place on handicap.

W&FYC success in Haven series winning coveted Cutler Trophy (2007)

Racing cruisers from Walton & Frinton Yacht Club were busy racing offshore from Harwich this weekend in the Haven Series, in unbroken sunshine accompanied by strong South Easterly winds.

Sunday saw the culmination of the season, and the last two of the ten races making up the series, which has seen much competitive sailing and mixed weather. A fitting end to the last race saw the whole fleet heading fast to the finish line, all with spinnakers set, and a strong south easterly pushing them along.

The Haven Series is a series of yacht races organised by Royal Harwich, Waldringfield, Haven Ports and Walton & Frinton Yacht clubs, established to provide racing between yachts racing under both IRC and Haven Handicap, with both classes holding equal status.

Overall in the IRC handicap Blue Beeste an X332, from Walton & Frinton Yacht club sailed by Martin Jenkins and Charles Penfold, achieved a creditable 3rd place, with 17 points and in the Haven handicap Tish, a Contessa 26, from W&FYC sailed by Geoff Anderson, gained 8 points to beat the fleet to first place in the series.

Geoff had already won the Britannia Trophy earlier in the series, as well as being best overall in the Sunday series. The Mercator Trophy was also secured for the club by John Hale in his Beneteau LadyH, earlier in the series.

Walton & Frinton Yacht Club crowned its success at the weekend by winning the coveted Cutler Trophy (a ceremonial sword specially cast by the Wilkinson Sword company), with 29 points, in a three boat team of Blue Beeste, with Martin Jenkins and Charles Penfold, Tish with Geoff Anderson, and Hullabaloo, a Hustler 32, sailed by David Evans. The testing course covered 20 nautical miles, starting at outer ridge buoy and finishing at beacon hill buoy, and the team set a stunning pace to win ahead of the other clubs.

Series Chairman, Alec Moss, commenting on the series, said that the event, which had been held over the last 35 years, continues to grow in popularity. This year had been particularly successful as it continued to provide challenging courses for the regions top class racing crews, as well as the opportunity and encouragement for the family cruiser to enjoy the fun and benefits to be gained from competitive sailing.

Prize giving for the series will be held next month.

The Port of Felixstowe 2007
International Regatta -10th Anniversary

Competitors making the intrepid crossing from the European mainland enabled the
Regatta, this year, to become International. Sponsored by the Port of Felixstowe and organized jointly by Walton and Frinton, Royal Harwich and Haven Ports Yacht Clubs.

The end of May Bank holiday, again, saw some very competitive racing, particularly by Hullabaloo XV which had a new mast for this season after shortening it at deck level by 2 inches, last year, but fortunately it stayed up.

Other serious competitors from the Club were Blue Beesty, Harlequin, Rainbow, Tish and Naylor. The racing was close and if you are not convinced, volunteer for No2 Committee vessel, the finishing boat and you will experience just how close it is.

The social side is just as rigorous as the racing, gentle Friday, terrific Saturday and less frantic on Sunday. Well stocked bars and galleys.

This Regatta is a major event for the clubs concerned and the large management team has a good proportion of members from Walton and Frinton, there are about 70 members of our Club involved, about 10% of our membership, racing and organizing, all staying on club-owned boats spending the weekend at Suffolk Yacht Harbour.

Alec Moss and Phil Stanton, the Hinge & Bracket of Results, work very hard to get the information out just as quick as humanly possible and do a great job. Elaine Sharp, secretary of the Regatta, backed up by Ray, her husband, does a brilliant job as secretary and organizing the Prize giving at the end of each days racing. Could not do without them.

We now look forward to the 10th Anniversary Regatta at the end of May Bank Holiday 2007, it will be a humdinger, with a great deal of effort being put in to make it as special as possible and again we are all so grateful to the Port of Felixstowe for sponsoring the Regatta for the 10th time.

If any other members would like to be involved, just call, see you on the water.

Ian K.F. Bucklitsch
Vice Chairman, Port of Felixstowe Regatta Committee.
