Winter Series – Dinghy Race 2

The second race of the Walton and Frinton Yacht Club 2012 Winter Series was held on Saturday and with a light north easterly breeze and clear weather the fleet of 10 boats were sent on a course around Horsey Island.

The race started at Twizzle Mouth with a windward start against a foul tide. First across the line was Geoff Battersby, Phantom, but with Martin Jenkins, Phantom, close behind but the Iso, Geoff Parker/David Evans was to windward and took an early lead on the west bank. Some boats including the Merlin of Simon Hipkin chose the east bank. Sally Bucklitsch, Topaz had an early capsize but quickly recovered. A close reach past Stone Point to the N E corner of Horsey had the Iso leading with Martin Jenkins second and Geoff Battersby close behind.

In Hamford Water the spinnakers of the Iso and Merlins helped them with an increased speed over the mono sailed boats. With Simon Hipkin catching Geoff Battersby but Geoff took a shorter risky course into the Wade and regained his position.

From then on it was slightly processional to the finish at the Club with Domonic Jacobs sailing a very consistent race and finishing close behind David Wood’s OK.

With low wind and temperatures only 7 dinghies braved the first race of the Winter Series. The start line was positioned at the Romney Rye mark with The Dave Trim safety boat being the other end of the line.

A rare mistake by Martin Jenkins, in his Phantom, at the start of the race meant he started at the back of the fleet but soon began to make up for lost time by carving his way through the field of other racers.

The 5 mph, or less, wind speed caused problems for the ISO of David Evans and Geoff Parker with their spinnaker dragging in the water during the section between the Spit and Twizzle markers, and Domonic Jacobs struggled along that stretch too. However, on the return Domonic made up a lot of ground on the other competitors, before the wind, dropping on his approach to the Romney Rye turn for home, caused him to fall behind again.

By the time the dinghies had entered the Walton Channel, heading for the finish line their positions were maintained.

Even after that poor start Martin Jenkins crossed the line a couple of seconds ahead of Simon Hipkin in his newly renovated Merlin-Rocket.

Facelift for 'The Dave Trim'

'The Dave Trim', one of the club's safety boats, has been given a makeover by Pete Sweeney - the new Club Captain.

He started out with the idea of just doing the usual annual anti-foul, but it soon developed into a fully fledge overhaul programme.

The Orkney 550 dory's scuffed and scratched vinyl lettering were the first to go, Before he removed all the electrics, the fuel system along with the seat. As the manual bilge pump was also attached to the seat that came out as well. So, while he was at it, he removed and cleaned the automatic bilge pump.

Add to that an engine service and the resolving of a steering problem, Pete then applied the primer and antifoul system, supplied by Andy Ladds, followed by the application of the new lettering.

With Roger Todd supplying a buffing tool and appropriate paste, to return its shine, 'The Dave Trim' was relaunched in time for the Snowball Race, when the engine started first time - well almost!

Snowball Race

Walton  & Frinton Yacht Club had an entry of 14 boats for their Snowball Race sailed on Boxing Day  in bright conditions and a steady breeze of Force 3 which fell away during the course of the race

The race took the form of a Pursuit Race and first away were the Toppers of Anna Brooke and Steve Garneys closely followed by Sally Bucklitsch in her Topaz. A medley of other boats, including three Phantoms, followed the last boat to start being an ISO sailed by Geoff Parker and David Evans.

The Race Officer set a course which took the boats down river to Spit and then a beat back pass the Clubhouse to Mill. The course then took the form of a loop between Mill and No.5 Buoy.

Brooke (Topper) lead the  fleet round Mill for the first time followed by Bucklitsch (Topaz) and Jenkins (Phantom) who had started in 8th.position . Rounding Mill for the second time  Jenkins had taken the lead from Brooke, Bucklitsch in 3rd.position and Battersby (Phantom) had moved up from 8th.position to 4th.position. During the final minutes of the race Battersby overtook Bucklitsch  to move into 3rd.position but was not able to pass Brooke before horn signalled the end of the race with the remaining boats  all finishing close together.

Nick Wood (Vice Commodore) presented the Snowball Trophy to Martin Jenkins and all competitors received a prize of a milk chocolate polar bear.
