The river bed of the Backwaters is leased from the Crown Estate by the Fairways Committee. This is a non profit making concern and manages the moorings to safeguard the interests of sailors, fishermen and commercial operations and has the right to let out mooring spaces.

To this end there are now a number of regulations regarding the moorings.

There is a restriction in total overall boat length on moorings of 30 feet in the Twizzle and 38 feet in the remainder of the area in the main channel.

The Fairways Committee lets the majority of the spaces through the Boat Yards but also has a small number of Private Moorings available to let. There is a waiting list for these moorings.
