Open Week started in bright sunshine on Monday 1st August, you could have been forgiven for thinking it had started on Sunday because there was a Summer Series race attended by nearly all the Open Week competitors keen to get some last minute practice in!

Lots of organisation has to go into an event like this and Tim Brooke did his usual enthusiastic and effective job if not a little bit closer to time limits than usual, no doubt due to the pressures of modern life for a young businessman!

The twist in the tail at the last minute this year was a decision to hold a Handicap Committee meeting the evening before the racing. The outcome of this was some grumbling in the ranks but no surprise in that as there always winners and losers in even things like handicap changes!

Both fleets were brilliantly supported, in Fleet 1 the Merlins and Phantoms were joined by braces of National Twelves, Lasers, International Canoes and 420s plus an OK and a Fireball.

Fleet 2 was as colourful as always with the brightly coloured Topazes, Picos, Mirrors and Toppers mixed in with the Elder Statesman of the club racers in their lovely Jewels.

Conditions for the week were generally excellent but the Wednesday gave a cloudy, wet and windy test for the fleets. Normal sunny service was resumed for Thursday.

An event like Open week simply can’t happen without the dedication of time and effort from many people, note must be made of the tremendous support from Liam and his crews in the rescue boats, Chris and his team in the bar and of course Anna Brooke and her team in the race box/boat for the excellent courses and race management.

The outcome? Results are listed here but in Fleet 1 a great battle was held by the top two Phantoms and the Merlin Rockets with The International Canoes basking in their new handicap bonus to get in amongst the chocolates and in Fleet 2 The Jewels just managed to hold off the hoard of enthusiastic youngsters and not-so-youngsters in the lighter Picos and Topazes to take overall honours.

A great ending to the week was The Gala Ball which for those lucky enough to attend provided the perfect finale!
